In this itinerary, you will be able to observe the mountainous landscape, traverse different fields of cultivation, and visit some of our local producers. The product of the lands in this environment was, until not long ago, the main source of food for Andorrans. A country that, given its orography and climatology, was isolated for much of the year and therefore had to survive with what it obtained from its soil. Metalworking, developed from the 17th century, contributed to diversifying the country’s industry, eventually becoming the main economic activity of the Principality. The Farga Rossell in La Massana was one of the last to close, and today it is an interpretation center that can be visited. The land of our valleys was dedicated either to grazing (high mountains) or to agriculture (in the flatter lands at the bottom of the valleys). It was not until the 19th century that potato cultivation was introduced. This industry reached its peak in the early 20th century, when production throughout the country exceeded 2,500 tons. Years later, the crops, although protected by the General Council until the 1980s, began to disappear, becoming almost exclusively tobacco cultivation lands. Today, La Massana is one of the parishes where the cultivation of this tuber has been most revived, with more than 16 farms. Our farmers have also opted to recover other types of crops, such as red fruits used to make jams at El Pastador (Sispony) or the hops with which the Alpha brewery produces its beers in Arinsal.
